The Reinvention Series - From Behind the Chair to Behind the Contracts

by Jessica Galán

For more than a decade, my life was defined by cutting shears, hairstyling & makeup brushes in the salon. I became a licensed cosmetologist in 2013, after enrolling into Mario Tricoci University in 2010. Bright-eyed, passionate and fully committed to building a career in the beauty industry. For years, I poured my energy into serving women, enhancing their confidence and creating transformitive hairstlyes & makeup enhancements with my hands. What I didn’t know back then was that another transformation—my own—was on the horizon.

The beauty industry taught me the power of trust. I learned how to listen, how to ask the right questions and how to understand someone’s vision even when they struggled to articulate it. Clients sat in my chair not just for hair or makeup, but for comfort, laughter, honesty and consistency. They came back because our relationship was genuine. Those moments—those conversations—were character building skills I didn’t even realize would become my greatest strengths in real estate.

Three years ago, I made a decision that completely changed my life: I switched careers hastly and I jumped into a homecare position before stepping into real estate. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t glamorous AND it definitely wasn’t part of the original plan. I went from a world where people knew my name, trusted my work and referred me to friends—to an industry where I felt like I was starting from zero.

But underneath the fear sat a quiet confidence:
"If I built a loyal clientele once, I could do it again!"

I quickly realized the beauty and real estate industries aren’t as different as people think.

  • Consultation is everything. In the salon, I consulted on hair goals. In real estate, I consult on property goals.

  • Trust takes time. Both industries require authenticity, honesty and emotional intelligence.

  • Service matters. When people feel taken care of, they remember—and they return.

  • Referrals build your business. Word of mouth created my clientele in beauty. It became the foundation of my real estate career, too.

These skills gave me the foundation to grow faster than I ever imagined. In just three years, I’ve built a real estate career supported by loyal clients who believe in my work ethic, my heart and my commitment to them. Many of my beauty clients followed me into this new chapter. Others found me through referrals. Some trusted me before I even fully trusted myself and each one played a role in the reinvention of my life.

Today, I proudly serve as a Broker Associate with Engel & Völkers Tampa Downtown & Team Leader of Galán Group, guiding families and individuals through some of the biggest decisions of their lives. It still amazes me how far you can go when you are willing to start over and bet on yourself.

If my story shows anything, it’s that reinvention doesn’t come with a perfect plan. It comes with courage. It comes with saying “yes” before you feel ready. It comes with accepting that growth often happens outside of your comfort zone. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to be willing to take the first step. I went from enhancing beauty to enhancing futures.
From creating confidence in the mirror to creating stability through homeownership & from behind the chair to behind the contracts.

And I’m just getting started :)
